Excellent birding

30/10/2025

Although birding can be excellent year-round, some areas and seasons allow for some special sightings....

Mhara River Camp (which is tucked away on the inland Chitake Escarpment in Mana Pools), is a paradise for serious birders. Its private concession boasts a mix of riverine vegetation, dense forest, and spring-fed pans, creating ideal conditions for both resident and migratory species.

Each summer, the elusive African Pitta returns to this region, lighting up the forest floor with its vivid colours; a bucket-list sighting for any birder. The surrounding habitat is also rich with cuckoos, rollers, bee-eaters, and more.

Other Rare Birds you might find:
•             African Pitta (regularly sighted!)
•             Narina Trogon
•             Broad-billed & European Rollers
•             Southern Carmine & European Bee-eaters
•             Böhm’s Spinetail
•             Black-throated Wattle-eye
•             Klaas’s, Emerald, Black & Diederik Cuckoos
•             Red-backed Shrike

Best Time: Late December to late February.

What to Expect: Walks through dense forest, expert guiding, and up-close views of canopy dwellers.

Nantwich Lodge in Hwange National Park - with sweeping views over Hwange’s mopane woodlands and dam, Nantwich combines safari and birding with ease. Raptors rule the skies, and colourful migrants arrive in droves during the wet season.

Birds you might find:
•             Black Headed Heron
•             African Hawk Eagle
•             Secretarybird
•             Kori Bustard
•             Lilac-breasted Roller
•             Steppe Eagle
•             African Paradise Flycatcher

Best Time: December to March
What to Expect: Raptor sightings, waterhole birding from camp, and scenic drives across varied terrain.

Bumbusi Wilderness Camp in Hwange National Park, where birding meets Archaeology.  Set near an ancient heritage site surrounded by jackalberry and mahogany trees, Bumbusi offers rare birdlife in a remote, historic setting. Ideal for those who love to explore on foot.

Other Rare Birds you might find:
•             Little Bee Eater
•             Green Pigeon
•             Swainsons Spurfowl
•             Arnot’s Chat
•             Verreaux’s Eagle
•             Green-capped Eremomela
•             White-breasted Cuckooshrike

Best Time: January to March
What to Expect: Walking safaris, historical ruins, and off-the-beaten-track birding.

Why visit?

Zimbabwe is one of the safest countries in Southern Africa for travellers. International embassies consistently list it as safe to visit.

Zimbabwe is home to 11 national parks, 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and one of the largest elephant populations in Africa. Don’t just stop at the Falls.

Zimbabwe’s landscape is incredibly diverse, ranging from granite outcrops and ancient forests to salt pans and lush green season plains. The Green Season (Nov–March) brings blooming life, fewer crowds, and some of the best birding in the region.

New immigration requirements - update

23/4/2025

To streamline and speed up the immigration process on arrival in the country, the Zimbabwe Immigration Department has implemented an online immigration declaration form that ideally should be completed by all travellers prior to arriving at any Zimbabwean border post, including Victoria Falls Airport.

  1. The intention is to have travellers complete the online form prior to arrival. Wi-Fi will be necessary to complete the form.

  2. If travellers are unable to complete the form in advance, they can do so upon arrival -either online (subject to Wi-Fi availability) using their own devices, or Immigration officials will provide access to devices at the port of entry.  Alternatively, guests may fill out the physical version provided by immigration.

  3. If completed electronically prior to arrival, there is no need to complete the physical form on arrival.

This new online process will, in time, replace the manual immigration declaration form and is aimed at improving the guest experience at border control.
