Iganyana Tented Camp
Iganyana Tented Camp is situated on a private concession just minutes from Hwange National Park. It is also adjacent to the African Painted Dog Conservation Centre.
Hwange National Park is famed for the extreme diversity of animals (and thus is arguably the most diverse anywhere). With an excess of more than 100 species of mammals, and over 400 species of birds – you can enjoy some excellent game viewing. Hwange is also home to some 30,000 elephants, making it one of Africa’s most important sanctuaries. The park is also home to one of the largest remaining populations of African wild dogs.
Iganyana Tented Camp is set in a teak forest, overlooking a wide grass plain, formed in part by a long-dry riverbed. Wildlife use this as a natural pathway to move between waterholes.
Accommodation at Iganyana is in 15 Luxury Tents (each accommodating 2 people) and a Luxury Family Tent suitable for 2 adults and 2 children (under 12 years of age). All tents have king or twin beds and en-suite bathrooms, as well as a separate dressing area, an indoor sitting area, tea and coffee making facilities, and double doors leading onto a shaded outdoor veranda.
All of the tents also feature a double layer of canvas for additional insulation, and cool, polished cement floors topped with natural fibre rugs. Bathrooms are equipped with flush toilets, double vanities, and indoor showers with solar-powered hot water. Air-conditioning and electricity ensure your tent is always bright, cool and comfortable.
The main camp area (a large Bedouin style tent housing the dining area and lounge) is shaded by tall rain trees. This then opens onto a large, raised wooden deck overlooking the waterhole. Below the deck is the Boma, complete with a fire pit. A low, sculptural wall of twisted acacia boughs is all that separates you from the wilderness beyond.
Activity-wise at Iganyana Tented Camp, you’re free to do as much or as little as you choose. As the game viewing activities are optional, you don’t have to feel obliged to be busy in the bush all the time. If you like, you can spend your day simply enjoying the camp and surrounds, and sit peacefully on the deck with a book and a pair of binoculars.
You can also enjoy a full day game drive inside Hwange National Park, which offers you the best opportunity to see a wide variety of species. You set out shortly after breakfast in an open safari vehicle. It’s a short and pleasant drive to the park, and you might spot the spoor of wild dogs along the way. The park boasts huge herds of buffalo, and large numbers of the unusual and distinctive black sable antelope. Other animals commonly seen here include lion, plains zebra, giraffe, hippo, and spotted hyena.
Have a a bush lunch under the trees beside a waterhole. Here, you can watch crocodiles bask in the sun, while zebras and giraffes come cautiously to drink. You return to Iganyana in time for sun-downer drinks and dinner.
There are also guided Game Drives in the morning and/or afternoon. Guided Walking Safaris are also available for morning and/or afternoon.
You might also enjoy a visit to the Painted Dog (wild dog) Conservation Centre.
