Camp Amalinda
Camp Amalinda is situated in the Matobo Hills, just 45km from Bulawayo. The lodge is tucked into an ancient Bushman shelter, literally hidden amongst the enormous boulders for which the Matobos is rightly famous. The granite domes and castle kopjes of the Matobo Hills, are among the most spectacular rock sceneries in the world.
Accommodation at Camp Amalinda is in 9 individually thatched rooms which include a trio of suites, ideal for honeymooners, or for a unique getaway. The three honeymoon suites have recently been refurbished – and each is named for the historical and cultural significance of the area: The Lobengula Suite, The Rhodes Suite and The San Suite.
All accommodation is truly unique, and has been artfully set into the rocks, making for some unique arrangements, and distinctly different en suite facilities… whilst not detracting from luxury and comfort.
The lounge and entertainment area is secluded and tucked away into a bushman shelter with a panoramic view across the Matobo Hills. Here you will enjoy excellent meals, served at a unique and massive teak table in the open air dining room.
You might also enjoy relaxing in the cosy library which contains some of the old "African Classics", whilst a secluded chess room, located amongst the tree tops guarantees peace and tranquillity. For the wine connoisseur, a visit to Amalinda's natural cave wine cellar should not be missed.
Sundowners are enjoyed around a warm fire in the enclosed Boma area. Below the camp is a large swimming pool which has loungers and a bar, overlooking a waterhole. A thatched health facility houses a fully equipped gym and a sauna. The Camp also has a resident Beauty Therapist for massage, manicure and pedicure treatments. This is the perfect place to relax and absorb the setting.
Mammal and bird species are prolific and include the highest concentration of Leopard and Black Eagle in the world. Activities at Amalinda include game viewing by vehicle and foot, bird watching, as well as visits to the numerous Bushmen caves and viewing their paintings.
Explore the hills where sacred ceremonies were once held. Here over 2 000 sites of the San (Bushman) rock art may be found. Drive through the granite hills in the footsteps of Cecil John Rhodes and visit his tomb. Learn about the battles which once occurred in these hills.
Tour an African homestead and interact with the local Matabele people, even meeting the Traditional Healer. You will also visit the Whitewaters Primary School and the Cyrene Mission School.
As Camp Amalinda is in a malaria free zone, it is an excellent place for families; children can spend their days rock climbing and chasing rock lizards, skinks and Giant Plated Lizards.
