Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is undergoing major renovations... and the images below are a indication of what this beautiful lodge will look like, in the coming weeks...

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is situated on the crest of a hill, overlooking the vastness of Lake Kariba, with the Zambezi Escarpment as a backdrop, approximately 55km south west of Kariba town.

Access to Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is either via charter flight from Harare or Victoria Falls, or by boat transfer from Kariba Town.  This boat transfer will take about 2 – 3 hours, weather dependent.  Or one my drive to Bumi Hills in a 4x4 vehicle, for serious 4x4 drivers only!  One may also drive from Harare to Kariba Town in an ordinary two wheel drive vehicle, and from there, one may fly into Bumi or take the boat transfer.

Bumi has 20 front-facing rooms (10 Premium and 10 Standard), all with bath/shower, overhead fan, air conditioning, mini-bar, tea-coffee station and balcony or veranda.

All the rooms look out over the Lake, with the premium rooms having the best views.
The Lodge has an infinity pool, a terrace cocktail bar, and a spa, all taking in the incredible Lake views.  The elegant main lounge is equipped with guest internet, wildlife DVD's, reference books, card and board games and there's also a comfortable TV lounge with full bouquet of satellite channels and a full-sized snooker table, and the dining room, also with splendid views.

Activities at Bumi Hills are unique, in that few lodges are able to offer both game drives and lake activities!  This allows for excellent game viewing by boat as well as the traditional open 4 x 4 vehicles and walking in the wilds with an armed professional guide.

You may also drive and walk to track rhino in the nearby Matusadona National Park. Among the species that may be viewed at Bumi are elephants and buffalo, massive Nile crocodiles, lions, many hippo, the elusive leopard, kudu, water buck, impala, warthog, monkeys, baboons, sable, zebra.

The Bumi area offers outstanding birdlife, especially water birds, and hundreds of species have been recorded. It is a thrilling location for photography of the majestic scenery and wildlife, but also the prolific bird life for enthusiasts.   Species include the African fish eagle with its haunting cry, the harrier-hawk, the martial eagle, the Bateleur eagle, the grey heron, the open-billed stork, the saddle-billed stork, the sacred ibis, the malachite kingfisher, the lilac breasted roller, the red-billed hornbill, along with many more.

Fishing at Bumi Hills is legendary, and is good year round.  Famous of course for its Tiger fishing, but also for bream, tilapia, vundu, chessa and Cornish jack

The Bumi Hills Wildlife Area is bordered in the North West by the Chalala and Mola communities, which are home to the Tonga, a delightful and very spiritual people who have lived in this area and along the length of the Zambezi River for centuries. They have preserved ancient traditions and still live a largely subsistence lifestyle that is reliant on fishing, livestock and small scale farming. In the village of Chalala these customs have melted together with the inevitable infiltration of modern ways of life, but guests are welcome to visit the village and interact with these amazing people.

One may combine some nights at Bumi Hills with time on board a houseboat – an outstanding experience!
