Nehimba Lodge
Nehimba Lodge is set in a 278 square kilometre Private Concession within the northern part of Hwange National Park. The Lodge sits firmly on the edge of the mopane woodlands associated with the north of the park and the Kalahari sandveld of the south and west – thus making all the diversity of Hwange's fauna and flora within easy reach.
Accommodation is in 9 spacious canvas under thatch tents, set on teak deck, overlooking the magnificent lodge pan, which is frequented by large numbers of elephants, particularly in the dry season. Each tent has a private balcony, en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, hot running water and electricity by generator. Of the 9 units, 2 are for families and have a king size bed and 2 three-quarter beds. There is also a double unit with day bed, and 4 double units, along with 2 twin units. All accommodation has a fan, tea/ coffee making facilities, and electronic safe.
The main Guest area comprises an open fronted thatch roof building, bar area, lounge and dining room overlooking the lodge’s waterhole. There is complimentary Wi-Fi available in the main guest area. Here you can whittle away the last of the daylight hours on the guest area deck with sundowners watching the many species that pass in front of the lodge and quench their thirst at the waterhole.
In addition, the lodge has a swimming pool – hugely popular in the summer months.
No two days are the same at Nehimba and game viewing experiences are tailor-made to your preferences. Nehimba offers game drives (morning and afternoon), walking safaris and night game drives in their private concession.
Game drives are conducted with expert safari guides in specially modified open 4WD safari vehicles. The walks are an excellent way to learn more about the bush and getting closer to some species. The walks are generally undertaken in the morning, as this is a more comfortable time of day.
The night drives make use of filtered spotlights – which allow you to see the wildlife without it being disturbed by your presence. You may get to see spotted hyena, porcupine, the elusive civet, genets, and leopard.
Nehimba has a viewing platform at a local pan, and is a lovely place from which to enjoy sun-downers, and to see the wildlife coming down to drink.
A unique activity at the lodge is a visit to the seeps - a special designated conservation area that is one of the few year-round, naturally occurring sources of surface water in the massive Hwange National Park. The seep is an ancient source of water that was once used by the San Bushmen. Today elephants visit the seep to dig for both water and minerals.
You might also wish to visit Mandavu Dam, which is set on a scenic and hilly spot. This is an excellent area for general game viewing but also for birding. You can enjoy a leisurely game drive to the dam in the morning and eat a picnic brunch on the dam’s edge.
Children under the age of 7 are only allowed by special arrangement.
Nehimba Lodge is a seasonal camp, and is generally open from April to November (subject to change).
